Hello and welcome to Josef's Vegetarian Cafe website.
As you can see, we are currently working on our website and will shortly be including further information, menus and photos.
In the meantime, for anyone who is interested in how we came to be here, we never originally intended to open a cafe! We were actually looking for somewhere to open a charity shop for the Suffolk Horse and Pony Rescue - a charity we run and manage, helping horses and ponies in need throughout England and Wales.
In our search we happened across 7 St John's Street in Bury St Edmunds. Whilst the property did look like the ideal location for a charity shop we could not help but think of other possibilities. A cafe? A vegetarian cafe? After all, Bury St Edmunds was lacking such a place and, as a lifelong vegetarian myself, I understand how thoroughly sick people are of the usual vegetarian options available i.e. shepherd's pie, lasagne....all cooked in a meat-filled environment.
We did not realise exactly what we were taking on! As well as all the legal work involved we have had to decorate, furnish, find chefs, cook, wash up and act as waiting staff. It has been a real learning curve and we are delighted with the response so far. We have had lovely comments from our customers, many of whom we now see in the cafe regularly.
We are very aware that, with the current number of tables, people are often unable to find a seat during busy periods. We don't like having to turn people away - not only is it bad for business it is also frustrating for our customers who are wanting to enjoy a vegetarian meal in friendly, pleasant surroundings.
We are, therefore, expanding into the 'lizard room' at the back (those of you who have seen it will know what we mean!) and have almost finished creating a bigger kitchen. Work is shortly starting on the outside terrace and we aim to have it open this summer.
We would like to finish by saying a huge thank you to everyone who has supported, tolerated and been patient with us in our new venture.
We hope to see you soon!
